Duende

Duende (Lindengracht 62, Amsterdam) — Dark, atmospheric, friendly — there’s no better place than Duende to experience the varied palette of small plates that are Spanish tapas. Take just one or two and you have a nice accompaniment to a few drinks; put five, six, or more together and you have a full-scale meal. Pick from dozens of choices, including tortilla española, champiñones al ajillo (garlic mushrooms), and calabacín a la marmera (eggplant/aubergine with seafood).

Accompany them with sangria, jump into the arena of friendly conversation, and before long you’ll be clapping your hands rhythmically and stamping your feet — and if not, you might want to sign up for Duende’s flamenco lessons. Bear in mind that though tapas are cheap individually, their cost soon adds up.
